Description of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca

Field of expertise:
In Materials Science and Engineering Faculty functions the Environmental Engineering and Protection Section. The main study and research directions, followed by the professors in the department that govern this section, refer to: The impact on the environment of technologies related to the valorification and prelucrare of natural resources, The replacement of fossil fuels with new renewable resources in line with EU directives (biomass, solar energy, wind energy), The implementation of Health and Security at Work System as well as Collection, reuse and valorification of refuse.
At present the department of Surface engineering and environmental protection is preoccupied with building several didactic and research laboratories concerning renewable energies, air cleaning and risk and industrial safety.
The publication capacity of the group lead to 12 publications in 2006. Publications at national level are written in order to disseminate the results in the national and industrial sector.
Also very important is the close cooperation with various research groups from different Universities (Technical University Brasov, Babes-Bolyai University etc.) and also with industry representatives. The collaborations have been created with the aim of interchanging knowledge in this new field of research.

Role in the project:
UTCN will support ENEA in the the performance of a Matrix of Biomass Inventory, that will permit to identify gaps in biological feedstock information and that it represents the first step for the Data-Base (EUBIDA) development.
Additionally, UTCN will support DTU in co-ordination and consecution for the development of the Report of Current Research Activities for Bio-Products Production.
UTCN, will also contribute to the Mapping and Identification of Best Biomass Sources in Europe by GIS
In case of needed, UTCN will support AUP in the preparation of the “Best Practices of Biomass and Bio-products Production Workshop”.
Besides, UTCN will collaborate with USRIEP in the consecution of “Current Research within the Consortium Report”. Also in the WP4, UTCN will support BZN to determine Centres of Excellences in the Biomass Sector.
