Description of Lithuanian Energy Institute

Field of expertise:

The Lithuanian Energy Institute started its activities in 1956 as the Institute of Energy and Power Engineering of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.
Activities of the LEI are governed by its Statute and includes the following areas and goals:
- perform research and accumulate data regarding the development and forecasts of energy utilization in Lithuania.
- assist the Government of the Lithuania in developing and implementing the national energy policy of Lithuania;
- assessment of utilisation possibilities for renewable energy (RE), assessment of RE resources and implementation new technologies;
- explore aspects of energy generation, conversion and transmission, relevant to local conditions; participate in developing efficient energy saving programs and technologies;
- accumulate and classify world-wide information on the rational utilization of energy resources, present recommendations to governmental institutions, industries and other facilities;
- monitor the environmental impact of power plants and develop emission abatement technologies;
- investigate hydrological characteristics of rivers and lakes in Lithuania, evaluate human impact on surface water resources, prepare suggestions for their protection.
Lithuanian Energy Institute has close contacts with enterprises of energy sector of Lithuania, residential building sector, universities, energy consumer advocated from industry and hose holds good knowledge about end - users, has regular contacts with energy managers in wide range of enterprises.

Role in the project:
LEI will be in charge of the leadership of the Identification of Sustainable criteria on Bio-products Production and will be, together with AUP, responsible of carrying out the related report.
Besides, LEI will contribute in the Identification and Mapping of Best Biomass Sources by GIS, supporting ENEA, task leader. Additionally, LEI will work for the determination of Best Practices and Bio-products Production and will support AUP in the Organisation of a related workshop . Due to their experience in the field LEI will be also expected to participate in the Review of Current Research Activities of Biomass and Bio-products Production.
Concerning to the dissemination of AQUATERRE, LEI will carrying out publication of articles, supported by the Scientific Manager (CENTIV) and other experts of the sector.
