Description of the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and the Environment

Field of expertise:

ENEA, the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and the Environment, is a public body operating in the fields of technological innovation, energy production and utilization and environment protection to support competitiveness and sustainable development.
ENEA is mainly focused on:
▪ to carry out complex research, development and demonstration projects, mainly technology and engineering - based, sets up and operates major scientific apparatus;
▪ assessment of the level of advanced technologies development, as well as their economic and social impacts, also on demand by public administration;
▪ promotion of collaboration with foreign bodies and institutions, also for defining technical regulations and participation to major research programmes and international organizations, providing its specific expertises.
ENEA has about 3,300 employees: nearly half are researchers and engineers, operating in twelve Research Centres located throughout Italy.
ENEA fields of competence include engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, geology, mathematics, agriculture, oceanography, information science and technology, meteorology, biology and many others.
ENEA works with the Italian Ministries of Industry, Environment, University and Research, Agriculture and Cultural Resources on developing and carrying out research projects involving the European Union and other international organisations such as the United Nations and the OECD, representing Italy in various IEA Implementing Agreements, including Bio-energy. The overall body of activities covers research and technology development on nuclear fusion and fission, material science, parallel computing, life sciences, including biotechnologies, agriculture, climate change, renewable energy sources and energy-environment relation.
Among ENEA’s main tasks, there are the research, development and promotion of environmentally safe and energy saving technologies. In these fields many programs on bio-energy and bio-fuels production and utilisation, have been and are presently carried out.

Role in the project:
ENEA will support the leadership of EUBIA in the Qualification of Biomass Sources. It will coordinate the rest of members to perform a detailed literature review about the current feedstock in the related countries. Furthermore, it will be responsible of creating a “Preliminary Inventory: biological feedstock report”.
Besides, ENEA will lead the Identification and Mapping of Best Biomass Sources in Europe by GIS and it will develop a related report.
Besides, under the leadership of AUP, ENEA will contribute to WP3 for the determination of Best Practices of Biomass and Bio-Products Production.
