Description of the European Forest Institute

Field of expertise:

The European Forest Institute (EFI) is the leading pan-European forest research network, with currently app. 130 member organizations (both research organizations and end-users of research) - from 37 countries in Europe and beyond. EFI's main research areas are:
- Forest ecology and management, including climate change aspects,
- Forest products markets and socio-economics,
- Policy analysis and forest information systems and modelling.
In addition to these four research programmes EFI co-ordinates seven Project Centres across Europe which are sub-networks addressing forest research topics that are of regional and topical relevance.
EFI has extensive experience in conducting European scale research projects in the field of forestry and environmental sciences, including in depth reviews and analyses. EFI has also developed state-of-the art tools and methods for large-scale scenario analyses on the state of Europe’s forest resources, timber trade etc.

Role in the project:
EFI as the only expert of the Consortia in forest research work will collaborate in the qualification and quantification of the Biomass Sources as well as will contribute in the Identification and Mapping by GIS.
In a second step, EFI will play a key-roll in the determination of Sustainable Production, identifying the main aspects to be considered for the implementation of Sustainable Biomass Production.
At the same time it will support DTU in the development of a Review of Current Research Activities for Biomass and Bio-Products production.
