Description of Biozoon GmbH

Field of expertise:

Biozoon GmbH (BZN) is a research-driven food biotechnology company established in 2001 and employs today six people. The company is located in Bremerhaven, the Centre of the Northern German food industry. It is located in the only German incubator centre for food companies, the BioNord (www.bio-nord.de). This allows biozoon to have access to all necessary food technologies and equipment needed for their development - from lab to pilot scale.
Biozoon develops health-promoting products and processes together with and for the food industry, trying to improve the functionality of foods and increasing the health of both humans and animals. The company sells licences, concepts and products in international markets. Biozoon is about to launch two new products, both dealing with the health concepts of sugar reduction in food against the background of increasing diseases related to insulin resistance (Diabetes type 2, Adipositas, etc.).
One of its latest developments is syrup from locust bean containing a functional ingredient, influencing the blood sugar level positively. In parallel, the company is working on a food box for children, presenting alternatives to sucrose in conventional sweets in a didactic concept.
Biozoon develops projects and markets products through partners who can offer effective distribution systems for products and concepts and also complement Biozoon in terms of development capacity. Biozoon has also gained experience in European research projects and is currently taking part in a European Thematic Network called AlgiNet dealing with the use of micro algae as an innovative raw material for food products and in a Coordination Action called Grub’s Up dealing with the valorisation of by-products from food production. These projects keep BZN up-to-date regarding the state of the art and future trends in areas which are of strategic importance to the company’s development.

Role in the project:
BZN will support UNAX in the AQUATERRE Co-ordination being responsible of the Communication. As a communication tool, BZN will establish a website during the second month of the project and will undertake promotion through web-based path of dissemination. Moreover BZN will develop the minutes of meetings.
Besides BZN will lead the Identification of Centres of Excellence and will carry out a related Report.
Together with ENEA, BZN will establish the Information Platform as a mean to offer data about Biomass and related issues.
