Tampere University of Technology (TUT) was founded in 1975, and since then has become one of the leading technical universities in Finland with many centres of excellence and research groups of international status.  The Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering (KBE), Environmental Engineering and Biotechnology Laboratory (EEBL) has strong link to the industry and other research institutes in Finland and employees more than 40 leading researchers (F/M = 1.2-1.4). The education and research activities carried at KBE-EEBL are internationally oriented with experience in microbial community dynamics, solid waste, sludge and waste and drinking water treatment, sustainable industrial bioprocesses for manufacturing and energy production, material flow management, physico-chemical and biological on-site and in situ treatment of environmental pollutants, environmental auditing and risks. Environmental biotechnology includes production-driven biotechnology for saving raw material and energy, control of microbial problems in industrial processes and molecular methods for studying the structure and function of the biological systems. KBE-EEBL’s environmental research activities include several international, EU, Nordic, and national projects.
